#NMDChat: Personal Branding
If there’s one consistent message that resulted from this week’s #nmdchat it’s “Have fun with it and be true to who you are. Best way to create a personal brand is to be yourself” (@starmoon). That’s the best (and easiest!) branding you can create, maintain and support in any situation.
- If you don’t manage your personal brand, someone else will. It’s critical. (@RickCartwright)
- Business vs. personal brand: consistency in style is important, only content/message differs. (@vickioneill)
- @ScottMonty is the top mentioned “personal brand” by the group (@mikemcmillon)
- Integrate offline with online by connecting and being generous. (@RickCartwright)
- Most creative personal branding? QR Code Tattoee (@JakeDCrawford)
Most creative responses and take aways from the conversation:
- @MNMorgan’s favorite color is a purple-ish brown, not the ugle brown
- To the question “Offline what can you do to increase your personal brand?”…. “Hire guys off Vegas strip to pass out and “pop” your business cards to people on the streets of Dayton” (@willmcg32) and “Billboards. Everywhere. J/K” (@GChristDBJ)
- A group of personal hashtags are being “owned”: #sitbythisguyatnmdayton, #duh, #justsayin and….#morecowbell
#NMDChat: Networking
Critical to any size and type of business is networking. There is much to know about who, what, where, when, and most importantly: what do I do after the event?
This week’s TweetChat was engaging and we had some humor throughout. I’ve indicated a few “TOP” responses by question that I thought needed special recognition. The completet transcript can be found here. Enjoy!

- Definitely twitter and LinkedIn to connect (@natedriver)
- Most of the networking principles I use are taken from “Never Eat Alone” by Keith Ferrazzi a must read book for business people (@JBalloonist)
- Twitter for sure. To me, Facebook is a little too “personal”. (@bellorz)
- LinkedIn and Twitter are top 2 for connecting after a networking event. (@vickioneill)
- @JakeDCrawford A6 depends on the person you are trying to connect with and the social media platform they prefer. (@pickmiketeague)

- Speed networking at a go kart place seems like a match #justsaying (@JakeDCrawford)
- They did a pretty good speed networking at #nmcincy a couple weeks ago at the Rookwood Pub… went pretty well! (@ggarvin)
- YES! adding structure helps the networking-challenged + you meet more ppl (@NaggingYetti)
- Yes! (@daytonmomspot)
- Rather than a Speed-networking event I would rather have a breakfast club event actually sit down and talk (@JakeDCrawford)
- @vickioneill The ‘right’ crowd & an ice breaker that made it work! An easy one is ‘How’d you get your name?’ Or “Tell us something no one would guess by looking at you?’ Fast & fun! (@teachpr)
#NMDChat Top Responses: Importance of SM in Education

- #sm is ebbing into education, research, employment & marketing – Those that ignore risk irrelevance in a short time (@connectyou)
- #SM is a huge, being a student in marketing and seeing the trends go toward #sm it is vital that I know #sm to stay relevant (@JakeDCrawford)
- I think it is important for all … some just have a direct responsibility. (@RickCartwright)
- @JakeDCrawford I’m the same way, I was part of the first #sm #marketing classes at Miami University my last semester of college. (@bellorz)
- SM is revolutionizing my profession — setting new standards and expectations. Beyond immediacy, it also increases accountability. (@gchristDBJ)
Q2: What kind of education have you received on #SM?
- Social Media Examiner’s Success Summits, An #sm manager course, Periodic webinars & old school #marketing (@connectyou)
- Marketing degree from Miami University, had a class dedicated completely to #sm #marketing. Lots of learning as you go. (@bellorz)
- SM has very little value for sbo’s unless the marketing “big picture” equation is in place (@NikkiSwisher1)
- none. Just figuring it out myself as I go along (@JBalloonist)
- “@vickioneill: @WilsonAdv Many thought leaders. To name a few @Chrisbrogan (all) @howellmarketing (strat) @cryderja (auto) (@HowellMarketing)
Q3: How important do you think it is to incorporate digital media into education curiculuum?
- Important, but more important to have someone that understands the topic giving instruction (@connectyou)
- It is super important to incorporate #sm within education: I love this infographic http://t.co/PsUzbXz @mashabletech @mashable (@BDIOnline)
- On average, how much of your day do you spend self educating on SM just to keep up? A vicious cycle but one we are all in. (@WilsonAdv)
- I think this is hugely important. If you were studying to be a doc, you need to know the latest medical tools available (@jonmikelbailey)
- Digital Marketing college integration is as critical to curriculum as Business Ed is… we live in the Info / Technology age (@NikkiSwisher1)
Q4: For who and when is it important to learn about #SM?
- For all and now. it has permeated our culture in all aspects, even if you hate it, you should have an understanding of it (@jonmikelbailey)
- Everyone really should try & engage at some point if not already. You really have to be conscious about making time to learn. (@MichelleNTon)
- It’s imp to everyone – #sm is a great resource for building/sharing knowledge about your profession (@NowellVanHoesen)
- It’s important for everyone to know #sm. The degree of “what” they need to know differs by person. (@vickioneill)
- In our industry I would say yes to everyone, but outside the industry not so much, its the job of the ones in it to educate (@JakeDCrawford)
Q5: How do you educate the local businesses about #SM?
- #tweetups can help to show the power of #sm (@NowellVanHoesen)
- Use technology to demonstrate the value & benefits. Learning digital requires non traditional thinking, teaching & learning. (@vickioneill)
- Blogging, email, Facebook community, one-on-one – And invite to #NMDayton!
(@connectyou) - If you are in the position to, be a resource, host discussion sessions, tweetchats, seminars, write blog posts, etc (@jonmikelbailey)
Q6: What are some local ways to be educated right now? We have #nmdayton but are their others?
- MediaPost, HubSpot, SocialFresh, Mashable Also, follow @chrisbrogan, @marketingprofs, @cc_chapman, @hubspot, @ambernaslund, @jaybaer, @smexaminer (@jonmikelbailey)

(@vickioneill) - RT @jonmikelbailey A6 MediaPost, HubSpot, SocialFresh, Mashable + @smexaminer & tweetchats, SBA offices, chambers (@connectyou)
Q7: Should there be more involvement (or creation of) digital media certifications?
- Things change too quickly to be able to come up with the criteria (@NowellVanHoesen)
- Def more involvement – certification? possibly, it would have to be updated annually imho (@natedriver)
- It would be hard to keep up with the changing technology, to certify someone and then have that become dated overnight, hmm (@jonmikelbailey)
- Perhaps for beginners (motivation, progression), particular professions (where required/ needed to be seen as thought leader) (@vickioneill)
#NMDChat Top Responses: Klout
Key take aways from the Klout discussion is that although this is the industry standard for measuring online influence, the modeling is not yet a science. The framework is in place to identify topics of influence however there is a need to refine. On average the participants check their Klout score 3 times a week and use that number to benchmark to the competition, determine content relevancy and influence. While equally important, personal and business Klout scores should be measured differently for these two groups.
Check out some individual responses to each question. The complete transcript can be found here with chat starting on line 49. Enjoy!!
Q1 What does @klout really mean? How do you define it?
-
@klout is about online influence. Depending on how you represent yourself is how you’re classified, ie marketing. It’s also a common measure to benchmark yourself/brand to others/competition. @vickioneill
-
@MichelleNTon I think of @klout sometimes as how active I’ve been with social media. Did I engage enough. @noudles94
-
A tool to measure social influence online… @RickCartwright
Q2 How often are you checking your score to measure that influence? And how often should you really?
-
I check my #klout score every morning. I guess it depends on how concerned you are with it and what you really use it for. @bellorz
-
I check daily, but feel it’s not really doing anything. Haven’t given out Klout+ yet. Can see more w/ new sites being linked. @starmoon
-
I just started using @klout.. I haven’t quite figured it out yet, but probably will check it every few days. @gchristDBJ
-
@Klout is a great way to build others up, and let them know about how they have influenced you. #Klout @ScottSliver
-
I have the @Klout add on installed on @FireFox & @rockmelt, so when I’m on @twitter, on my laptop, I have a constant reminder. @markduddridge
Q3: What influences you to check your score and/or increase your @klout score?
-
Probally to show how popular I am its a lil compared to @scottsliver jk – but it shows if and what a person is influential about @JakeDCrawford
-
A good way to measure my efforts .. an I effective with the tools, etc. @klout @RickCartwright
-
I like to see how I’m improving and seeing what “works” as far as engagement and what I’m influential about @bellorz
-
Didn’t care much abt @klout until @cryderja explained how he uses it to figure out influential people to follow -good strategy @ggarvin
-
Benchmark against online intent to measure what’s working vs not with followers. @vickioneill
Q4 So if Klout isn’t 100% correct about influence, why does #klout matter.. or does it?
-
It’s a rating! And that sometimes is enough of a motivator. @noudles94
-
It may not be prefect, but it’s directionally correct – and it’s getting better! @RickCartwright
-
It matters because it is the only measurement tool we have for influence and its at least doing a pretty good job @JakeDCrawford
-
I don’t know that @klout score necessarily matters, but it serves as a guide for how to best interact and produce content. @gchristDBJ
-
It helps you to adjust the way you are interacting with your audience @NowellVanHoesen
Q5 How often are you giving out K+? And what for?
-
I tend to do one or so a day. I miss here and there. Recognition to folks I think do it right. @RickCartwright
-
Whenever I check my @klout score, I generally give out at least one klout+ @ggarvin
-
I tend to give #K+ out to people I’m engaged with on that day or week. @willmcg32
-
When ever i remember – klout isn’t to high on my priority list but i do when i can @JakeDCrawford
-
I really don’t use the +K feature, but it’s something I’d like to start doing. @bellorz
Q6 What impact does combining the 10 networks you can use influence your score?
-
Will be interesting to see how the new channels will affect —>; RT @JakeDCrawford: @ScottSliver love a lil social experiment @connectyou
Q7 Since we’re talking about +k and influence.. What do you think is a good #klout score??
-
63 its not to high its not to low, it says im here and im doing something but im approachable too @JakeDCrawford
-
The @klout score metrics are going to have to settle down before answering that – too many changes going on with random shifts @ggarvin
-
I would like to get into the 80′s. @Scottsliver is around 70… #GottaKeepMyKloutUp @willmcg32
Q8 Should Klout be as important for biz as it is for personal influence?
-
Maybe more so, but not I am not sure it can be measured the same way. @RickCartwright
-
It would give businesses a good measure on their influence among customers and if they use SM right @JakeDCrawford
-
I believe this needs to build in relevancy. Businesses are just now looking at klout in screening potential employees @connectyou
- I think there needs to be a separation of @Klout analytics for biz & personal. How can they be measured on the same scale? For our biz, we pay attention to our speakers & sponsors @klout scores. Try to see who can potentially spread the word about #bdi1! @BDIOnline
#NMDChat Top Responses: What is Local?
These are JUST the highlights of each question. Check out the complete transcript to see the great engagement on a few of these questions. Good learning and interesting perspectives on local. #NMDchat is a great way to learn – quick!
Just a reminder our #NMDchat is every Thursday at 10:00 a.m. EST. Next week our topic is Klout!
Q1: What does “Local” mean to you?
- For businesses, local may or may not have geographic boundaries. For consumers, local does not have boundaries. @vickioneill
- My location .. and what is nearby (location & context) @RickCartwright
- To me local is the area I live in, or in a business case, the area I want to market to (doesn’t have to be geographic) @JBalloonist
- Where I am, and where I am going. More and more biz are becoming “glocal” @CarlaWeisHale
- To Vicki’s point, “local” will mean different things to diff. biz. A barber has a smaller area than a car dealer for example @robbunting
- To me it would be Dayton and the suburbs of Dayton @vosscaddy
Q2: What’s the value “local” brings to any business?
- “Value” local brings to any business is a more relevant and targeted message. Higher propensity to convert efforts into sales. @vickioneill
- Being able to precisely target your advertising & eliminate waste, huge adv. of online and mobile vs. traditional advertising @robbunting
- I prefer keeping my monies local whenever possible, so I support local biz @CarlaWeisHale
- Value add is better targeting and being relatable to your customers @MichelleNTon
- I prefer customer service upmost if a local business serves me well then im loyal if not I look to more corporate based comp. @JakeDCrawford
- Local can bring more to the game than price..different via services, relationship, etc. @RickCartwright
Q3: What’s the value “local” brings to you?
- Value local brings to me is it seems personable, biz took effort to understand the “who” and “why” before the “what”@vickioneill
- For me, it’s relationships and environment / ‘feel good’:) @RickCartwright
- Local biz has more at stake than chains. “Corporate” can’t come help them out. Thus, better quality/service (usually) @CarlaWeisHale
Q4: Why should all brands – big and small – understand their local market?
- Each region is different. In US especially, many different subcultures, tastes, preferences from region to region @CarlaWeisHale
- Same intent but message needs to be conveyed according to the area. “How” to conveny msg to #NYC is a lot diff than Savannah GA @vickioneill
- Understanding leads to deeper relationships, which leads to deeper loyalty, which leads to more biz @JakeDCrawford
- It allows the business to interact with their customers on a more personal level, helps to build trust with the community. @bellorz
- That’s why I love Fairborn local sushi restaurant Saya. They know my name. @betsywoods
- Marketing w/out understanding your market is like shooting bullets into space. Must gear correct info to the right people @connectyou
- It also depends on who you are marketing to, consumer or B2B; I think local is important for both, but more for consumer brands @JBalloonist
Q5: What resources are available for researching out “who” your local market is?
- Tying back to our previous #NMDChat. I use Yelp, Foursquare to find local places @MichelleNTon
- Many resources available for general info (emarketer, mashable, mobile marketer, etc.) but for local Kelsey is great. @vickioneill
- Many, many good resources in #Dayton region, and a lot are free/inexpensive too. @CarlaWeisHale
- The US Census Bureau will give you general demographic info based on your area, here’s #dayton http://t.co/M4FbEgH @bellorz
- Offline - Chamber, community orgs Online: Website analytics, twitter search, 4sq, FB & Google places – check competition @connectyou
Q6: Does your mobile device reflect “local”? If so, how?
- It seems easier for #mobile devices to reflect local in a metropolitan area. In my small town, it does not @connectyou
- Mostly. #4sq, #Yelp, nearby tweets, local #fb friends, weather, yes. I like industry news, so not “local”. Too depressing. @vickioneill
- I selectively use location tracking on my iphone, mostly for checking in at clients properties @DigitalKaitlyn
- It is going to take a bit more time before local businesses are responding; not all owners are geeks like us @JBalloonist
Q7: Which national brand does an outstanding job of local advertising?
- @McDonalds does a great job localizing menu items. @vickioneill (Not a popular question)
Q8: What local brand does a fantastic job at knowing their local market?
- Gonna have to say Heather’s Coffee in Springboro again! They just got it goin on! @vickioneill (not popular either)
#NMDchat Top Responses: Google+ vs. Facebook
New Media Dayton held the 2nd #NMDchat with engagement focused on Google+ vs. Facebook. The outcome of this topic was G+ is still so new that not many have joined or spend much time test driving the FB competitor.
Highlights from #nmdchat plus links/resources for more info are below. For a complete list of all related tweets, click here.
Q1. Why did you want to start using Google+?
- I wanted to get familiar with the newest social networking site. I was a little reluctant to learn a new one at first. @vosscaddy
- All the cools kids were doing it, and I wanted to check out the hype @NowellVanHoesen
- I like the idea for early adopters. These are the people that will utilize it for the real potential. @Joe19G27
Q2. What’s your primary use for G+? (games, hangouts, content sharing..)
- Hangouts are cool. My primary use is content sharing. Most of my circles consist of who I follow on Twitter. @willmcg32
- Networking and content sharing and ability to share content with different groups where appropriate. love the circle idea. @vosscaddy
- I know it’s coming, but it would not upset me if games NEVER make it to G+. Love hangouts. @RickCartwright
- Learning what the capabilities are and how they can make life/business better @NowellVanHoesen
Q3. Is your use of #Google+ different than #facebook?
- Yes for me. FB is now my friends and family. G+ is my professional arena. @willmcg32
- Yes, for me, FB is where I connect with “close” friends, Twitter is more “professional”, and G+ is starting to mix the two. @bellorz
- Little bit I’ve used it some same, some different @Brad_Lovett
Q4. Do you think there are perceived “circle” trust issues? I’m thinking along the lines of “meet the fockers.” Am I in your circle? Are you in mine? Are they the same level of recognition?
- I don’t have any concerns about “circle” trust issues. I don’t think I have optimized my use of circles. G+ Privacy: I tend to be very public & not uptight about it. I think google has done much better this time (vs. buzz launch) @RickCartwright
- Not yet. Not adding anyone I don’t yet @Brad_Lovett
- I don’t think so, I’m a lot like @RickCartwright, I haven’t really optimized the feature yet. @bellorz
- It seems to me there always is a huge privacy discussion surrounding #facebook. Why not apply that to any other social network? @MichelleNTon
Q5. Biz profiles are not allowed on #g+. Are there any benefits for biz at all, or should they stick to FB?
- For now, I don’t think there is a benefit for a biz to be on G+. the general consumer isn’t on there like they are on FB @willmcg32
- Biz will benefit in depending on how they use G+ to connect @NowellVanHoesen
- There will be biz profiles, but for now, I don’t see a big reason for business. Are your customers on G+? If not, don’t go @Brad_Lovett
Q6. If there are no real benefits right now, should companies still keep watch on Google+? And what should they be watching for?
- Yes! 1) Business accounts and advertising will some to G+ (darn). 2) content will be indexed / searchable (value). @RickCartwright
- Having the power to segment your customers in to circles will be huge. There is so much that can be done with that @bellorz
- Being able to send a targeted message to an individual circle will be a huge plus for biz’s. No more generalized messages. @bellorz (that’s right – he got 2 mentions on this one! J)
Q7. Is there room for G+ in the digital world (personal or biz)? How will the diff platforms evolve and survive?
- Its gonna be hard to pull the non-techys over to G+, people dont care enough to switch they have everything they want on FB @JakeDCrawford
- I don’t see it as a zero sum game .. networks have unique DNA and community. Short term, little impact. @RickCartwright
- G+ isn’t going anywhere. I don’t think FB is either. Twitter might be at risk though. My $.02 @MichelleNTon @willmcg32
- I’d like to see G+ become the “new” FB 4 personal & business use. Circles are key. unless FB adds circles then who wins? @vosscaddy
- Exactly! RT @mikestenger Like a segmented email list, just more social. @bellorz

#NMDChat Top Responses: Location Services
New Media Dayton held the first of many weekly Tweet chats. Our first topic was Location Services such as Foursquare, Gowalla, SCVNGR, Facebook Places, etc. The majority of those actively involved in the discussion prefer Foursquare over the others however there were some uses of other apps. Check out the below that highlights responses for each of the four questions:
Q1. What’s your favorite location base service and why?
- I’m huge on @foursquare. Love me some mayorships and badges! @MichelleNTon
- @FourSquare no doubt #4sq is not perfect but seems to making lots of upgrades and I love my Syracuse 44 badge! @ggarvin
- I like using FourSquare, but I like using check-in w/ Facebook. Much easier to tag people ie almost everyone has fb @dhartzler10
- I prefer @FourSquare since they’ve made updates/changes. Wish Facebook’s #geolocation options were better, I like tagging ppl @lmbryant
- I’ve used @Gowalla for some time now. @shanadouglas
Q2. Why do you think smart phone users aren’t using these apps?
- I don’t use the apps simply because I don’t have enough time to add one more thing to my already-full plate. @MindyC7609
- My battery does okay with the GPS, but the app has some freezing issues for my old schoole #blackberry @MichelleNTon
- There’s a limit on how much people want their lives tracked, ; “I checked in at Starbucks” isn’t interesting @Brad_Lovett
- I would say memory &/or battery use. Also the idea that someone might use a posting to stalk or burgle a user. @markduddridge
- Privacy, some people don’t like to broadcast their every move @NowellVanHoesen
Q3. What’s the best use for location based social networks?
- Using “check in” specials as a way to attract customers to your business. @bellorz
- I think it’s about discovering new places and getting the tips from others. @MichelleNTon
- Whoever wins this #location game will be who can capture the attention of “normal” users – we are not the norm. @carlaweishale
- It’s not to be a stalker! lol jk Best use is immediate reach for on-demand deal redemption (when available). @vickioneill
Q4. How often do you receive some sort of incentive from a checkin? Then how often do you redeem it?
- I have never earned a loyalty #4sq perk. Received a discount as a #mayor once. @bryansuddith
- Frequently, but too many cheap trinkets to bother @mcdougallmarcom
- @RadioShack offers good checkin discounts @eebrockman
- Don’t recall earning, let alone redeeming, a #4sq perk. Would definitely redeem 1; unsure I’d go out of my way to earn 1 tho’. @markduddridge
- Some #4sq users are all about using it to find deals, others only use it as a game against their friends to collect points. @bellorz
